What my username means
I don’t remember where I first heard this, but I’ve had it memorized for years. With some digging, it seems to have come from a submission to Dr. Richard Wiseman, who sought to find the world’s funniest joke:
“Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are going camping. They pitch their tent under the stars and go to sleep. In the middle of the night Holmes wakes Watson up: ‘Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you deduce.’
Watson: ‘I see millions of stars and even if a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.’
Holmes: ‘Watson, you idiot, somebody’s stolen our tent!’”
I think it’s pretty damn funny. Funny enough to win “world’s funniest joke” in 2001? No. But I had just finished a speedrun of BBC’s Sherlock during month ?? of the pandemic and my already deteriorating brain thought, “Hey, did you know your last name is also Watson?” So “Where is our tent” got squashed into a Twitter handle referencing the joke and the rest is history.
I’m not sure exactly how Medium works quite yet, but this will likely be a repository of published works and other thoughts that I’m not going to bother finding a place that wants them in print.
